About us
1.
Mission
Visión y Compromiso is dedicated
to the improvement of socioeconomic and health
outcomes of underrepresented communities through
the support, enhancement, and advocacy for the
Promotora and Community Health Worker (P/CHW)
network.
Through its partnership with the
P/CHW workforce, Visión y Compromiso has a
unique understanding of community issues and is
positioned to address the ongoing, ever-changing
social and environmental determinants of health
and community well-being.
Visión y Compromiso will be the
recognized statewide training and advocacy
leader of the P/CHW network by providing and
facilitating leadership development, capacity
building, and by integrating Promotoras’ voices
as community experts.
Visión y Compromiso is the only
statewide organization that provides leadership
development, capacity building, and advocacy for
Promotores and Community Health Workers in a
continuous fashion.
Since 2001 the P/CHW Network has
organized Promotores in communities throughout
California to support their efforts to organize
Latino communities around health issues, deliver
culturally-specific health services for Latinos,
confront obstacles to care, and inform health
policy.
Regional networks support the
work of Promotores’ in communities statewide,
including: remote areas in the most northern
part of the state; underserved rural communities
in the Central, Coachella and Imperial Valleys
and central coastal areas; and population
centers in and around the San Francisco Bay
area, Los Angeles, and San Diego.
Promotoras (promotores) are grassroots community
members that act as natural helpers and liaisons
to their neighbors and local neighborhoods.
Promotoras are viable community assets, and they
are agents critical to reducing health
disparities and social change. Promotoras
may or may not be affiliated with community
institutions.
Promotores are primarily Spanish
speaking men and women (mostly women) who are
trained to provide accurate, culturally
appropriate health information, conduct street
outreach, arrange and conduct talks with their
peers, make presentations to the community at
large, and they may or may not be affiliated
with community institutions.
The Promotora/CHW Network spans
throughout the state of California and partners
with local health and nonprofit organizations
that integrate the Promotores model into their
organizations. gaga
