Our Programs
Each year hundreds of
Promotoras and CHWs throughout the state of
California benefit from capacity building
programs developed by Visión y Compromiso.
Here are some of the programs we developed
during 2007:
1.
Leadership
Principles: Diabetes Prevention
The
diabetes training is a project sponsored by
Abbott Laboratories. Visión
y Compromiso organized various community forums
about Type II Diabetes; community needs, views,
and perception about diabetes was collected and
analyzed. As a result of the community forums
Visión y Compromiso created a basic skills
training curriculum on leadership skills and
diabetes prevention and self-management. Five Promotoras groups have been trained with this
curriculum and they now teach patients with
diabetes and their families about prevention and
self-management.
Through funding
provided by L.A.Care Health Plan, Visión y
Compromiso is working on developing and piloting
a culturally competent training package that
prepares Promotoras to help Spanish-speaking
people with disabilities and their families to
access and advocate for disability-related
healthcare and other services.
Visión y
Compromiso’s Promotoras are currently conducting
community forums to educate
people with disabilities about availability of
services and offer resources to participants.
Funded by
Kaiser Foundation of Southern California, the
Policy Advocacy Leadership
Program is a Promotora-centered policy and
advocacy training program.
The Leadership Program is
consistent with our priorities and aligns with
the Kaiser Permanente Healthy Eating Active
Living Initiative.
Through this
project Visión y Compromiso trains experienced
Promotoras in Southern California identified via
local networks and community organizations on
advocacy and legislative work and its impact on
Obesity and Eating behaviors.
We anticipate that Promotora’s
work will be enhanced within the community and
lead to sustainable social and environmental
change and that community resident will be
engaged in a process that will generate
beneficial and responsive outcomes to realistic
needs. Through this project, we will increase
awareness of and involvement in prevention
strategies to reduce diabetes and obesity.
Visión y Compromiso, in collaboration with the
State of California Office of the Patient
Advocate, is organizing community forums to
inform the community about the benefits and
rights of medical insurance recipients in order
to obtain all the benefits they are entitled to.
Community forums are conducted in many locations
throughout Southern California, including Los
Angeles County, Ventura County, Santa Barbara
County, and Kern County.
We understand how making financial decisions and
understanding personal finance management is
crucial for our wellbeing. Studies show that
being in debt is linked to anxiety and
unhappiness. But here
Visión y Compromiso
offers simple steps to help Promotoras make
goals and take manageable steps to financial
freedom. And that means less stress and more
peace of mind.
Hundreds of Promotoras and their families have
benefitted from this program sponsored by
Citibank.
Funded by Ford
Foundation, the Reproductive Justice Consensus
Building provides a forum to facilitate the
sharing of resources, creates learning
opportunities, and fosters dialogue about
social/reproductive justice issues and its
impact on Latino communities.
Visión y Compromiso
is working on assessing the needs, views and
opinion of Latino communities on issues of
reproductive health and reproductive justice by
utilizing the Latina Health = Family Health
methodology reflecting an ecological approach to
well being. In addition, VyC will develop a
reproductive justice curriculum for Promotoras
to bring to Latino communities throughout
California.
